"The best way to resist all of this mess is to pay attention to what feels good to you and your body, and what doesn’t, and start figuring out how to communicate that to the people who are supposed to care about you. That’s a big part of your job as a baby right now, so you’re off to a great start. Just try not to lose that as you get older, and more and more people try to tell you they know better than you do."

While I’m not a fan of including celebrity kids in pop culture, this is an interesting and valuable statement for any young woman.

After a conversation about old, embarassing diaries, I was compelled to search out my old Xanga. It was indeed embarassing, but also really fun to read. I could do without some of the whiny entries from my freshman year at Mizzou, but the chronicle of my senior year at Benet, almost from start to finish, has been a blast to revisit. I was so incredibly happy in every single entry, with every aspect of my life. I still am, by the way, but it’s different. I’m simply not as carefree as I was at 18. I can no longer describe a perfect day that started by “meeting Jim, RJ, and Matt on the top of the parking garage.” Why would that have even been fun? I have no idea, but I know it was. That ability to spend basically every waking moment with people I care for is one I would love to have back. Fortunately, even if the time spent together is much more brief, the quality of shared experiences is just as great. And now, those experiences take place not just in the western suburbs, but across the nation, in its capitol, and around the world.

I’ve also enjoyed revisiting the music I was reading in various entries. Matchbox 20 stands out as a particularly guilty pleasure.

I don’t care how many critics tell me this season sucks…I can’t wait! So many forbidden romances, so many beautiful gowns, so many snarky comments from Maggie Smith to look forward to.

"Most good things happen without a plan: friendships, falling in love, finding a job, and so on. If you want to make your new year count, you’ll need to be intentional — not by setting goals, but by making space in your life for what really matters"

What a perfect last day in the city I am proud to call home, with family and friends I am blessed to call my own.

Driving home along LSD on a crystal clear night was the cherry on top.

How lucky am I that even though I’m a little sad to leave home (let’s face it, I mean my mom), I am just as thrilled to return to my new city and new life? Unbelievably.

I had my own worries: Coaches have been portrayed ad nauseam; originality seemed impossible. But confirming Pete’s instinct, Kyle’s combination of authentic toughness and authentic compassion hauled you in. His unique performance showed that sensitivity is a form of strength. Which is why, if he won’t marry me, Kyle can at least give me some lessons on how to be a better man.

What an amazing night this was. I will certainly never, ever forget shaking the hands of Barack and Michelle Obama.

Thank you to Vampire Diaries for introducing me to JVM. Yes, I said Vampire Diaries. Deal with it. This song is so dreamy.
